Heidelberg Materials is Norway's largest supplier of cement, accounting for nearly 80% of all cement in the Norwegian market. It is no secret that the cement industry accounts for a large share of global carbon emissions – between 5 and 7% of total CO2 emissions come from cement production. So when Per Brevik, director of sustainability at Heidelberg Materials, first presented the idea of building a carbon capture facility into their cement plant at Brevik over 10 years ago, few took him seriously. Not merely sweeping the problem under the carpet, but actually taking responsibility for his own sector and helping to solve engineering challenges that had never been solved before, motivated Per. He wanted to leave a better and greener future for his own daughter. Together with Aker Carbon Capture, the carbon capture facility at Brevik has become a reality, and production of the world's first carbon capture cement was set to begin in 2024. Inspired by Per's story, Heidelberg Materials did not want to simply launch this as a press release or a technical information film, but in a way that connected with the deeper values and motivations behind it. They therefore contacted Sølvrev with a wish to create a launch film that played on emotions and presented the new cement as a high-end product.
Solution:
The commission from Heidelberg Materials reached Sølvrev at the very start of winter 2023, and portraying a green and sustainable future when there is snow and minus 15 degrees in Oslo is no easy task. With a clear vision of what we wanted to create, the solution was to seek out locations elsewhere in the world. This allowed us to create a versatile film with a long shelf life, and let the futuristic prestige projects that Heidelberg Materials has previously supplied cement to help inspire the vision of a green and modern future – a journey that took us to both Rome and Tbilisi within a week of the production getting the green light.
As a project Sølvrev has followed and filmed over a longer period, we are very proud to be part of this story and to show the world how Norway is contributing with new and innovative solutions in the green transition. A milestone well worth marking.
