Produced: Summer 2022
Assignment:
When Taiwanese artist Qing-Feng Wu was planning a collaboration with artist Aurora, it was Sølvrev who was contacted. Qing-Feng Wu and his management had seen several of the works the production company had previously done for Aurora, were big fans, and wanted director and producer duo Sigurd Fossen and Christer Dyngeland on the team.
Qing-Feng, not yet widely known in Norway, is an award-winning producer and artist best known as the frontman and creative force behind the famous indie band Sodagreen. With 16 million followers, he is one of the most successful Mandopop singer-songwriters of the current era and has over 1.5 billion streams from his 2019 solo album "Spaceman". When he came to Norway, it was to make a film with Sølvrev, and the goal of the video was to create an abstract and artistic interpretation of the song Storm.
Solution:
Storm is a beautiful ballad exploring some dark thoughts and feelings, and how two souls find each other, find the light, and lift their gaze through that journey. When things feel dark on the inside, you can feel very estranged from the world, as if everything is a little like a dream. Inspired by this feeling and Norwegian winters – with only a couple of hours of sunlight per day – director and producer duo Fossen and Dyngeland wanted to explore the concept of light as a symbol of hope in an otherwise fog-filled, empty, white and cold landscape. The solution can be distilled down to the special connection that can form between two people, and how we can be a light in the darkness for each other, even when we are physically far apart.
To create this expression, one approach was to film in what is perhaps Norway's most unique oak forest, full of large trees, heavy snow and sub-zero temperatures. In addition, it was decided to recreate parts of the forest indoors to gain better control of the lighting and abstract the expression even further – a task that required moving 8-metre-tall trees across Oslo and an extraordinary effort from Art.dep and Fiksern to create a magical set.
Result:
The project became one of Sølvrev's largest ever, with over 40 participants. The unique film has to date been viewed over 3.5 million times on YouTube and has received positive reviews from fans around the world.
