EP 3 Lyssetting

Sigurd shares some simple tips on how to improve your lighting for everything from basic video recordings to more advanced setups, using just a few easy techniques.

The first thing we do when lighting a room is to use natural daylight. When we open the curtains in this room, we can see that we need to turn off the ceiling light, because the ceiling light does not match the light coming from outside.

Make sure you position your subject so that the light hits them at approximately 45 degrees from the side. In this case it looks great, but it can appear a little too dramatic. To make it more balanced, we bring in what we call a "fill light" to send a little light in the opposite direction. This evens out the contrast.

As a final adjustment, we add the third light – what we call a backlight. This makes the subject "pop" more against the background. That is all it takes to achieve a cool and effective lighting setup.

If you only have a window to work with, you have already come a long way – the other lights are simply a bonus if you have the time and opportunity to set them up.
